In anatomy class, I was struck by the mechanics of breathing. The rib cage, though rigid, moves in concert with flexible intercostal muscles and the diaphragm, expanding and contracting the thoracic cavity with every inhale and exhale. My sculpture explores this interplay between rigidity and flexibility to create shifting spaces. A modular solid framework represents the thoracic cavity. Repeating lattices form a rising and falling three-dimensional structure that mirrors the cycle of breath. Within these lattices, pliable connective tissue forms evoke muscle fibers, tendons, and tissues, weaving fluid subspaces among the rigid grid.
