Dunhuang, the gateway to the Silk Road, houses thousands of Buddhist grottoes layered over centuries. During my visit to the Mogao Grottoes, the largest of these complexes, I was fascinated by a model exhibition that rendered the caves only in negative space, as interconnected voids resembling an ant colony. In my project, I drew from this rich spatial imagination. Using the actual dimensions of the caves, I carved out negative space within an acrylic mountain modeled after the undulating Dunhuang landscape. By spray-painting the recesses, I created an X-ray-like effect that illuminates the hidden depth of the grotto system.
